Gone Fishin'

I stumbled across a great blog recently with a Facebook page chock full of beautifully painted Infinity miniatures, and one post in particular featuring a bag for taking models to an Infinity Tournament.

I have been taking just the models I need to work in a small biscuit tin crammed into my regular work bag. Something like this would be great, and works better for taking a larger force, or everyone at once if need be.

I couldn't quite find the same kind of bag, and I checked my local Lidl supermarket to no avail. Whilst looking though, I ended up on a site which I used exclusively for foam back in the day. KRMulticase are fantastic, good quality and low price alternative to Battllefoam/GW cases and a really nice guy to boot. They have a bag with Dropzone Commander logos on for half price which fit what I wanted after seeing the blog post above. It was out of stock and not planned to be restocked, so I ended up with a generic version of the same bag. I did some measurements and the old cupcake carrier combo will fit in this with room to spare. I was worried that TAGs would be too tall for the box and I'd have to work out a solution, but the Raicho fits in fine and I believe he is one of the taller Combined army TAG s as the rest look rather hunched

The bag allows me to carry my minis, and lunchbox etc for gaming at work, and should be a lot more secure than the biscuit tin in a backpack setup that's on currently. It also has plenty of room for tokens and books and all that fun stuff :)

Dragon Knights - Storage Wars

It's been a while since the last update, but in amongst a busy weekend, I had to be at home waiting for a plumber to fix a leak in the bathroom, and it's all been a bit hectic.

Storage seems to be a topic that I cover a lot on the blog, but it's in the hope that someone else will benefit from my trials and tribulations.
The current issue is that of the dragons I'm using for my Eldar Exodites. I'm fairly sure that all the infantry/'jetbikes' will fit in one of the couple of variants I have for storage currently, but the wingspan & height of the dragons makes then take up a pretty large footprint in their current 'under bed storage box' home. Taking this around on the bus to the club for gaming would be a pain to say the least, so I posted in the gaming group to see if anyone had any ideas, and was messaged pretty quickly by someone who I vaguely know from trading groups, with a pretty great solution.

So the box is a larger version of what I'm using at the moment with a wooden runner near the top and a cut up magnetic whiteboard for both the larger models in the bottom, and the infantry to sit on in the top. I think this is the best solution for what I have so I'm going to try and work out how best to adapt it.
I'll probably end up using a 'really useful box' for the larger container as I know these are good quality & sturdy, but then I'm not sure what to do about the shelf with infantry on, or if maybe I'll use a shallower box for the dragons like I am at the moment, but of better quality and then have the infantry boxes in a holdall/backpack.

When I get the time i'm going to go through related measurements and see what the best option is, but as it happens I may be involved again with a theatre group I used to stage manage for on Wednesdays so transporting the models might not be too urgent for now :/

Storage solution mk2.5

I know what you're thinking, I've only just overhauled my storage solution, so why am I updating it again so soon?!

Well the short story is that I showed a friend of mine how to setup this solution for himself, and he found a better size box to use. It turns out the 9litre really useful box is the same dimensions but deeper than the 4litre one I was using. This means it has space for all models of differing heights (my Emissary is tallest by far and fits with lots of headroom), and even allows the lid to be magnetised to make use of a second floor space effectively.

I had some spare steel sheet stuff, and the 9litre box only cost me 5 GBP so I replaced my guild storage boxes with this one. I will stick to the smaller box for Neverborn unless I expand that like crazy at some point.

The new box is a little more than double the height of the 'regular' box I use

It also seems to be a a couple of centimetres larger length/width wise

Bonus lid storage

The height of the box allows a pretty generous amount of room above 'regular models'. I've got my Hoffman Crew on the lid here for ease of access whilst i'm taking them in and out to paint :)

Another good option depending how large your collection is, hope this is useful

Storage solution mk2

A while ago I wrote a post on a storage/transport solution I had adapted from a video I saw on Youtube (written a year ago in fact, wow).

Since then I've seen the benefits and disadvantages of said solution, and learned a bit from it.

-First thing is that the self adhesive magnetic stuff really wasn't attracting magnets that strongly, at all. It attracts the baking sheet I ended up using just fine, but magnets (either side) not so much for whatever reason.

-It's great for lugging around whole armies for some game systems but for other, more skirmish based systems its a lot of case to carry around

-It's only really suitable for single factions. I have my Infinity & Guildball models in their own metal tins (i think its meant to be a biscuit tin or similar)

I've been using a new method since maybe June last year, which I feel is working pretty well.

The magic ingredients
Really useful box (4 litres)
Magnets
Malifaux Miniatures
Steel sheeting
The last item on the list is the easiest and simplest thing I could find in the UK. I know that actual steel sheet would be a lot more cost effective, but buying it and making it the right size and fixing it into the box were all things that I was struggling to find/buy/workout.

One of the steel sheets is a little shorter than the dimensions of the case, so I just cut a small section off a second sheet with scissors to fill the gap.
The rest of it is quite simple, the magnets linked above will fit inside the circle on the underside of a Malifaux base and be flush with the bottom. I superglue them in and fill the gap with greenstuff, I'm not really sure why to be honest, just feels like it might be more secure.

For larger bases I use either those same magnets with greenstuff between them and the base, then liberally covered in superglue, or 2mm magnets which are flush with the 40mm bases.

I really like this solution as storage and transport (fits easily into a backpack), its stack able, easy to expand, easy to setup and the models don't shift about at all (I've proved this in the middle of a hobby shop, inverting the case with no lid and shaking vigorously, with no falling miniatures).

Our current travel bag for playing away from home is just a star wars 'bag for life' with my miniatures (standard and tall mini's - see below) and my wife's miniatures plus a token box, rule book etc sat on top. Bonus kitten.

Caveats
The only issue I encountered so far was with really tall models like the Emissary. All I did here was simply get a bigger box, and repeat the setup. The Emissary, Lone Marshal and Pale Rider all live quite happily in here and tag along with the smaller box whenever I go to game anywhere.

The other solution to this is for models like the Mature Nephilim or the Guardian from the Hoffman set, or even a Shikome on a flying stand.

All I've done here is stick some of the spare steel sheet to the shortest wall inside the box. The model can now fit in there and not really take up that much more space than the base would. It saves me having to take the larger box if I don't need any of those miniatures, or i'm playing Neverborn for definite :)

And that is it. I've not reinvented the wheel or anything here but I do feel I've improved on my existing solution.
I will be retrofitting my previous case attempts with the steel sheet rather than the previous 'magnetic' stuff and keeping using them for my 40k armies as the model count is usually quite high, and foam is expensive if we are all honest :)

On The Payroll - Robo Kitties

I managed to get the last two models assembled for Hoffman over the (busy) weekend, and the Hunters along with the Watcher raised an interesting problem.

All three models have a very thin connection point to the base. In the case of the Hunters I had to plastic glue them straight to the base for strength, and then wonder about how to base them. I eventually decided some kind of mud on the side that the models are one, and sewer type basing on the other side.

I managed to pin the watcher through one very thin and unstable leg to the base. In both cases however I wasn't looking forward to lifting them away from the magnetic storage I have been using of late (future post on my new storage/transport method incoming).

The workaround is these oddly angled pipes that are on the bases.

I have inserted a pin through the base which I've bent to be flush versus the base and then glued, I will also add greenstuff over the top of this to reinforce it. Above the base is a length of plasticard piping, filled with greenstuff which I pushed over the pin sticking out on top. I then glued this in place, and greenstuff the join on the base. Let it dry, and presto - I can pull the miniature away from the base without using the model to pull on, meaning they have no fear of coming away from the base, and I retain my sanity :)
I don't think the pipes look desperately out of place either to be fair. My only regret will be when I come to paint the hunters I think, as they are quite low to the base.

Year in Review 2016

Hello!

That's right, I'm not dead. Still alive and kicking, however I'm still just as useless at updating a blog regularly.

I'm determined to give it one last push to keep a regularly update wargaming blog, and if it fizzles out this time, then I guess that's a sign to stop :)

I initially wanted to give this a go with a brand new blog, and a clean slate rather than the multiple restarts i've attmepted here after what was at one point a regularlry updated blog with what I percieved as decent content. However, I don't want to lose all the content here and have to re-host any photos or lose any articles I particularly liked. I have had a bit of a play with the way things look though which may or may not change in teh next few weeks. This all depends on if I can work out how to create a new image for the blog header for example :)

Let's look back at the year so far and see what there is to work into a new blog.

- I went back to the Leeds game night early in the year and began with Hordes, and a few games of Malifaux there too. In no small part due to the faff of getting home so late on games night after the long train ride home afterwards(all on a work night), I stopped going to the Leeds game night.

- A long time friend of mine was also getting into Malifaux around this time and since then we have played many games and expanded our group of two in to 6-8 people now playing Malifaux. We have even had two 6 player three round 'tournaments' on boards at home (My wife and I took 1st place at one of each of these, just sayin'..). My wife also plays Malifaux now as her first ever tabletop game aside from D&D, which means I play more wargames now than I have since I was a lot younger.

- A new independent hobby shop has opened in the town nearest to me, so now that our budding Malifaux scene is developing, we are hoping to support them by booking out enough tables there for our next event. It's important to support things like this as there hasn't been a hobby shop closer than Leeds for maybe ten years!

- Whilst I will still be playing (Mk2) Warmahordes with friends, I have downsized my collection, and parted ways with my Gators, leaving me with my fair size Skorne collection for the occasional game.

- I mentioned in January this year that I had just re-jigged my desk setup in the study, giving me a lot more hobby space, and better access to various projects and making it generally easier to paint and make toy soldiers etc. i will hopefully post a few pictures in coming blog posts.

- I have refined my magnetic storage solutions, and again I will be going over this in future posts :)

- I have made what I think are massive improvements in my painting with my Malifaux collection and will try to feature these (again) in some posts in the future. I got a wet palette for my birthday this year and I think that this has helped a lot with me moving away from drybrushing and starting to paint 'properly' with layered highlights.

- With the recent release of the new Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marines, my friend and I will be reworking some of our very first armies that we collected and played together, with me starting fresh with some of my most loved miniatures, the Space Wolves. This will mainly be a modelling and painting project as we are both just as disillusioned as always with the constant rules updates to games systems leaving us out of touch. We will be sticking to 6th/7th edition 40k for the games we play.

This pretty much covers what I hope to write about in the next few posts. I would also like to make some kind of posting schedule to help keep me posting regularly. Things like WiP Wednesdays, and product reviews.

Yet again I've dumped a wall of very uninteresting text with no pictures, but this blog is as much for me as it is for anyone else that reads it ;)

Getting Carried Away

EDIT: Refinements have been made since this post, found here :)
I've recently re-thought my miniature storage solutions in a rather complete overhaul kind of way.

All my models until now have been stored in either KRMulticase card or aluminium cases, and to this day I would recommend them as a solution to anyone that wanted foam for their toy soldiers.

I saw a video a long time ago and I've wanted to attempt something similar ever since. Fast Forward to when I started my Eldar Exodite project, and I had large dragon models which were unsuitable for foam due to size, and I came back to this idea to attempt my own version.
The video in question uses a brand of craft items which seems to only available in the US, so I humbly present my UK version of the entire thing.

The case itself
A cupcake carrier, available here (bearing in mind you will be removing the inserts designed for the cakes and thus the pink), they are also compatible with each other with regards to the clips on the side to join layers.

Magnets
You will need to magnetise both the carrier, and your miniatures. I use the magnetic sheeting self adhered to the bottom of each section of the case, on which I use a baking tray. The beauty of this is that, instead of permanently affixing sheet steel or similar to the case and then popping magnetised miniatures on/off this, the baking tray is removable, and perfectly serviceable as a 'tournament tray' to move minis between tables etc.
As far as magnetising miniatures go, I won't reinvent the wheel and describe the process as it is done here near perfectly. the only extra steps I take are to build the green stuff up the sides of the magnet a bit and then drench the whole assembly in super glue. I'd rather the magnet stayed inside the base when I remove the miniature than remaining connected to the tray.

Transport
For some of you, you're done! Congratulations, your new army transport solution is complete bar personalisation (stickers/painted logos, I've no idea - go nuts) and expandable by the purchase of further carriers whose trays can click to the bottom of your existing case.
My own solution however has one further step. Call me vain, call me paranoid, call me what you will, but I don't relish the thought of going to work, and subsequently carrying my (transparent) case around Leeds city centre during the evening. I'm also not convinced that the plastic handle & lid would bear the weight of a whole tray full of say metal troll bloods and another tray of metal dire trolls for example.
What I landed on here is a simple, cheap holdall in which the case sits very comfortably, and leaves room for a jumper/jeans & tshirt/books/dice/templates etc.

Caveats

• I've yet to work out a way of transporting gargantuans and the like using this method. My first thought was to have a new case, removing the bottom floor of the top case and permanently affixing it to the bottom, making a double tall space for them to stand in. I've no idea how to do this though. Hot glue and a dremel are my first thoughts but I don't know how this would change the rigidity of the whole thing etc.
• Some models need more than one magnet underneath to prevent them sliding if the case is jostled at all - getting on and off the train etc. This isn't really a concern though as the magnets are cheap enough to add a pair to metal warbeasts rather than just one. Three to the base of the likes of extreme models etc etc
• Tall models won't be happy here. straight off the top of my head i'm thinking of Molik Karn/Mulg. I don't yet have a solution, which is disappointing because I won Molik, and will own Mulg soon enough. However, all my blindwater guys fit in there just fine, the tallest of which being a Blackhide Wrastler I guess, I also tested a Bronzeback Titan.

All in all, I'm really pleased with my version of this from the original video, and think it's a pretty solid solution.

Older and Wiser?

What a great week!

Last Thursday (17th) was my birthday and my wife and I spent the day together.  On Friday night some friends came to stay in preparation for the Manchester Comiccon on Saturday.

We had a great time, I went as Jayne Cobb from Serenity/Firefly and got lots of comments/requests for photos which was very strange as I'm not a people person at all!
I won't go into too much detail other than to share the photos I took of some particularly good costumes that we spotted. We mainly spent the day shopping and looking at all the stalls & memorabilia, not being too interested in the 'celebrity' panels etc.

I managed to source a carry case as well whilst on sale, and first purchase discount brought it to £13 delivered, and I ordered some magnets and magnetic sheets (not as sticky s magnets stuck to my PC case...) and have lined the case (sans cupcake things) and started to magnetise my miniatures for transport.  I'm still looking to source a deeper box for the dragons to go in, but that isnt proving particularlry easy due to the weird dimensions.

There are a few more specific subjects which I will be writing up in the coming week, but also lots going on (I've mentioned before that I stage manage a theatre company who have a performance next week), so bear with me :)

Time Warp

I'm not going to go into why its taken so long to update because there's no real reason other than not having a lot of time/motivation to do so :P call me lazy, call me what you will but here's a couple of backdated blogs :)

Hi again

I know I promised an update a Monday or so ago, and eluded even to more regular updates, but I simply haven't had chance.

This past week we were in Ireland, and the week before that, I can t even think why I didn't get chance to write anything up, but there we are.

Just a brief one today as last week has burnt me out a fair bit and I've ended up with some weird hayfever/headcold combo and my eyes are terrible sore.

I realise that the main factor in updates is timing, and had a bit of a brainwave to solve this, and as such I'm hoping for a keyboard which will work with my 10" tablet for my birthday (July 17th hint hint :P) so that I can write and post things on the train to/from work and utilise some of that time. Hopefully this will go some way towards regular updates, and themed days (WIP Wednesday, DnD Monday) Which I had hoped to do).

I tried out some blu-stuff molds after the last post, and the results were mixed.  It is perfect for casting flat backed items, but for anything which has detail at the back which needs capturing, then a two part mold would be required, and is beyond my current ken. I hope to be able to achieve this though eventually or I'll bankrupt myself buying bits for the Eldar project. It seems that insta-mold maybe best for two part molds so I will be pressing this as a solution at some point.

In the interest of maintaining topic for this post, we are jumping ahead in time a bit here :)
I had an actual game of 40k against a friend this week! Look, proof-

So here you can see my fledgling force bolstered by Dire Avengers for obligatory troop choices and a Wraithlord for points. Just shy of 1k points.

And here are the forces of Nurgle arrayed before me, cultists on the left marines with a mark in the middle, and hellbrute/rhino with plague marines & lord on the left.

I enjoyed the game ALOT. Lots of the rules are the same to the last edition of 40k that I played (going back maybe ten years?) and the new rules serve to make it very fun to play, and easy to pick up.  I want to get my troops choices sorted so the next time i sit down with my miniatures will be guardian jetbikes and Wave Serpents.

I also want to get a transport solution sorted, and in true style, I found my solution here and despite the containers in question being Walmart branded, they seem to be avaialbe with free UK shipping on Amazon. I alos thought that this kind of thing would work also (with trays removed), but I would need to be careful with the height of things like wave serpents and Wraith units. I'm thinking at teh moment that a combination of the cupcake trays and another, deeper plastic box for the larger items will be the best bet. Hoping that both will also fit into some kind of holdall to transport easily and discreetly. Credit to Element Games for the magnetic solutions :)

It's my Birthday in a couple of weeks, and the birthday of a friend (whom i've known for 25 years) and we each mentioned (independantly) to each other recently the new game from Mantic - Deadzone and we are splitting the cost of the starter box four our birthday gift to eachother this year. So expedct some unboxing and painting progress entries for this coming up maybe August kind of time. I think that's it for miniatures and modelling for the time being.

I've mentioned before that I want to add a wraithknight model to the army ant some point and have bounced some ideas of a friend (Deadzone friend) so expect either some mystery WIPs or some more detailed progress discussions (with full disclosure), I will hopefully pick up some of the required parts with any spare money after my birthday :)

That's it for the time being, thought I do have a 'collectables' related post to update with at some point hopefully soon (tomorrow?). There is a Couple of Birthdays today so I won't get much more time after posting this. There are also three birthdays next week including mine... What's so good about July?!

Wet Weather Wednesday

Hi again, pleased I am managing to post when I said I would, let's hope it's something that can be maintained!

I was off work today as I had a dentists appointment, and I received my first filling in my 29 years of life, which I don't think is too bad going.

I also managed to finish the drybrushing layers on both the Dire Avengers and Striking Scorpions.I even added some tufts to the Scorpions as I have been doing with most other models so far. I'm undecided as to whether or not they fit with the Dire Avengers as the cork they are on is a lot thicker, so I'm not convinced it will look as good.

All that's left though is the pre Tamiya clear layer on the gems for Scorpions. I have been thinking a lot about transport, and I am planning something to replicate what is seen in this video (again with the videos right?), as it is modular, and expandable and can be applied to any of the miniatures I won, with the simple (and relatively cheap) application of magnets.  One of my project for the weekend whilst we visit our friends, who are also craft minded is to scout out suitable cases and seek advice from someone into more traditional crafts :)

I also picked up some blu-stuff, again after seeing success from my friends blog (linked above), as a combination with insta-mold as they both work quite differently. Blu-stuff seems to be more of a press mold device, but I will be testing this, in order to establish which is bettera t what task.  I have a few places on my Wraithlord & Wraithguard models which will require dragon horn type protrusions and the bits for such will be nigh on impossible (let alone expensive) to get hold of without making copies.  It's worth mentioning here that IP is not infringed by replicating any other IP for personal use, it's only illegal when trying to make a profit out of the sale of such a copy.

I stumbled a cross (yep you guessed it...) a great idea in a video and the Warlocks shown here using High Elf Shadow Warrior parts spoke to me loud and clear, so I will almost certainly be borrowing that inspiration when I get around to making mine. I think it will translate pretty well to a mounted version.  

This does divert from my original fluff somewhat, but what's a good story if it doesn't evolve? :)

The last thing I want to cover today is that I have scrubbed down the Fire Dragons that I had soaking in Dettol, and they look pretty clean. The paint layer comes off very easily, but the primer turns into a ridiculous sludgy mess that's hard to get off anything it touches. for some reason I decided to only wear one latex glove to deal with them so you can imagine how great my hands smell now after umpteen washes...

Before I get these sprayed and started painting (still struggling to replicate the colours I'd like to use, although I've pretty sure what I'll do) I'm going to work on some of the 'more important' elements of the army as I mentioned in the last post, and try and get the army playable at last!

I also mentioned last time that there are a couple of DnD related points to talk about but I'd like to keep that in a separate post, so tune in next time for Dungeons and Dragons madness on Monday.

Oh Happy Day

Oh Happy Day indeed! I finally found a wargaming club! It was a chance post that I spotted on the Privateer Press forums, made by a forumite who's location was listed as Huddersfield (the next town over from me) so I messaged the guy, asking where he gets his games, and he messaged me back with the best news I've had in ages - there is a club in Huddersfield, ten minutes away from the train station. Genius. We have exchanged a few emails and I'm meeting him there on Monday so I can meet the gamers.

I of course checked about Warmachine/Hordes, and there are four guys who play with various factions, and a couple more, not including me, who have shown interest in the Iron Kingdoms. To be honest, I'm chuffed to bits. After a few months of waiting for the Leeds PG to get time to sort out a venue in Leeds (to be fair I think venues are scarce) I managed to trip on the most random opening, and found one ^_^
Needless to say I will be keeping the blog updated with how it all goes, and hopefully getting some videos/pictures of battles. I've decided not to take any miniatures on my first visit, so's I can meet everyone and get used to the place before I start gaming, get comfortable, ya know?

In other news - I ordered myself a Miniature case from the lovely people at KRMulticase (a double aluminium case with custom trays) and I will be showing pictures off at the weekend along with my recent painting progress :)

It's another long post, for which I apologise, but this is massive news :D

Mixed bag

As I write this, I'm playing a Vassal game against Astray from Rolling Yellow Dice and having a blast tbh :) He PMd me while I was layering on my Manticore, so I finished up, and started up the game. Lots of fun, though I still have a lot to learn, both in terms of rules, and in terms of tactics, but I think they go hand in hand. I lost by the way, I made a rather daring move with Stryker vs Kaelyssa in turn 3, and failed abysmally, but at least I played like I had a pari, I could have tried to save him, but where is the fun?!

EDIT: - I made the assumption that Stryker was a gonner, but on turn four, he smote Kaelyssa quite verily and bought me the game for no losses on my side, vs Kaelyssa and an unhealthy looking chimera, unlucky dice for Astray though :(

Still really enjoying painting, got the Manticore to the highlights stage, and pleased with progress, and got my Hydra base-coated, and not really looking forward to the detail on those fists of his :)

I know now what trays I need for the double aluminium case I'm after from KR, so I'll order that to coincide with my next day off, I hate re arranging DHL delivery, lol.

Quick update really, was just excited about finally making a contact for Vassal games, which, let's face it, is far far better than just painting up my minis with no game in sight! Oh - I did attempt to get a thread going on Army cases, as a reference, but I'm pretty sure people are just fed up of seeing that sort of topic, so it is on it's way down the board with a few posts. At least I can say I tried :)

I am the highway

Long time since last post, but plenty going on :)

I'm pretty much done with my magnetized Mymidon, and I' really pleased with the way it is going. I took the advice of IK adventures, and went for a bit of a conversion with the magno-phoenix's sword, which is looking pretty good as a spear! I also added a pointing finger to the other hand, so whichever myrmidon I use looks as though he is calling out an opponent for a solid thrashing :)

I managed to get basecoats, and the thermal blade done for my non magnetized Phoenix, and I'm really very pleased with the way everything is looking. Been pretty busy with christmas recently, with shopping, and various social outings etc, but me and my girlfriend celebrated our christmas together yesterday(we are spending the 25th with out respective families), and I got my new brushes! Nothing too special, just some of the shiney new GW brushes, which I am very pleased with.
We had a lot of snow this weekend, coupled with very cloudy days, so I haven't been able to take any mini photos, but I will endeavour to do so over the festive period on one of my all too few hoilday days from work.

I've been very eager to the previews of the new battlefoam bags to be honest, and with the previews up on the site today, I have had my mind made up by the pricetag... $145 is alot of money, coupled with shipping, it's obscene. I know that Wayland games are distributing for Europe, but the prices will still be pretty high. I've spent most of my lunch hour today over at http://www.krmulticase.com/ pricing myself up an aluminuim case for half the dollar value of the battlefoam case. While the battlefoam cases may well be a dream purchase for my fledgling WM collection, it's far too much money to spend, especially considering that I still don't have anyone to play against. Besides all of the above, I have purchased at least three standard KR cases, and two custom cases(for my filthy GW habit), and the guy that runs the site is a top bloke, and always happy to help. I'm even in the gallery section! As I was so chuffed with the cases, I offered my adaptation of one of the standard cases as an entry to the gallery(my case is the one with the rune on the front midway down)
